Actually, X is the one no one selected. The Chicago Tribune, founded in 1847, was referring to 1920 Democratic presidential candidate and Ohio Governor James M. Cox. The editorial board made the statement after Cox compared Republican candidate, Ohio Senator Warren G. Harding, to a character from a popular newspaper comic.
